Comparison of commercial PVB binder and synthesized acrylic co-polymer for forming ceramic green tapes |

Multi-layer ceramics technology utilizes several layers of ceramic green tapes stacked together. Ceramic green tapes must have sufficient physical properties for use in multi-layer processes such as punching and stacking. Polymer binder is essential for forming ceramic green tapes. Commercial poly vinyl butyl(PVB) binder is widely applied in forming ceramic green tapes but high Tg of polymer and tight control of burnout conditions and carbon residue present problems. As a solution for the above mentioned problems acrylic co-polymer was investigated. Acrylic co-polymer was synthesized and its thermal properties investigated. Also ceramic green tapes were manufactured using commercial PVB binder and synthesized acrylic co-polymer. Physical properties of manufactured ceramic green tapes were investigated. Synthesized acrylic co-polymer was found to have lower Tg, lower burnout temperature and no carbon residue after burnout due to different pyrolysis mechanism from PVB binder. Also ceramic green tapes formed using synthesized acrylic co-polymer facilitated application in multi layer processes compared to commercial PVB binder. |
