Boronic acid is characterized by its ability to react reversibly with the diol group, which can be used to detect bacteria by binding to the bacterial cell membrane. We have developed fluorescent carbon dots containing phenylboronic acid with fluorescence quenching through a FRET system by reacting a diol modified fluorescent probe (DYE) in a base condition. When bacteria are added, the fluorescent carbon dots can be used to detect bacteria by releasing cyclic boronate-ester form of DYE through the binding reaction with the polysaccharide of the bacterial group. Also, it was confirmed that it could be used for the detection of bacteria in real contaminated river. Our system can be applied to bacterial detection through selective exchange of ligand based on various environments, and it is expected that it can be used as cheap and convenient biosensor for a wide range of compounds.
