Compared to current treatments including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers the advantage of an effective and selective method of destroying diseased tissues without damaging surrounding healthy tissues. In PDT, one of the problems limiting the use of many photosensitizers (PS) with low water solubility is the difficulty in preparing pharmaceutical formulations that enable their parenteral administration. To achieve targeted delivery for PS, we synthesized a ligand-mediated nanoparticulate drug carrier composed of folic acid-conjugated amphiphilic block copolymers. The composition of copolymers and properties of self assembled nanoparticles were characterized by 1H NMR, DLS and FE-SEM. The release of PS from nanoparticles exhibited pH-dependent profiles. |
