Polyamide (PA) thin film composite reverse osmosis membrane with graphene oxide (GO) was produced for enhanced water flux and antifouling properties. Polyamide membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization between m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of polyethersulfone support membrane. Graphene oxide has great hydrophilicity and excellent antibacterial activities. There were two pathways to introduce GO into PA membranes: (1) Aminated GO (GO-NH2) was incorporated into the PA membrane by being dispersed in MPD. (2) GO functionalized with acyl chloride (GO-COCl) was incorporated into the PA membrane by being dispersed in TMC. The formation of GO-NH2, GO-COCl and reactions between functional groups were confirmed by FT-IR, XPS, TGA and FE-SEM. As a result, GO embedded PA membranes showed higher water flux than normal PA membrane without loss of salt (NaCl) rejection and also, they exhibited significant antibacterial activities. |
