Among all the precursors for making carbon fibers, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is one of the most popular polymers and has been widely used in recent years. However, PAN homopolymer are hardly used due to poor solubility and processibility. Recently, some studies reported that PAN copolymers incorporating acidic comonomers, such as, itaconic acid (IA), crotonic acid (CA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) can improve the solubility, spinnability, hydrophilicity and drawability of PAN, and especially accelerate the stabilization during the preparation of carbon fiber. In this study, P(AN-IA), P(AN-CA), and P(AN-IA-CA) were polymerized via a free-radical polymerization, and investigated the effects of comonomers containing acidic groups on stabilization of PAN copolymers. The synthesized copolymers were electrospun to make the nanofibers and then annealed under different conditions, the temperature and time for stabilization, and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA, and XRD, respectively. |
