Currently development of new conjugated polymers attracted great attention because of their potential applications in electroluminescent device, nonlinear optical materials, biosensor and chemosensors. Polymers with extended π-system have attracted a great amount of attention owing to both their rigid structure and their optical properties. Thus we have attempted to synthesize poly(p-phenylene)-based conjugated polymer with pyridyl group in the main chain by the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction of diboronic acid and dibromo compound. It was possible to obtain rigid polymer which was soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform and THF by introduction of a flexible long alkoxy groups into the backbone. Absorption maximum of polymer solution in chloroform at 364 nm was altered by addition of metal ions to the polymer solution presumably due to the interaction between polymer chain and metal ion. The wavelength of emission maximum was found at 407 nm. When the polymer solution was exposed to metal ions, strong fluorescence quenching was observed. Ion-responsive optical properties of spin-coated film were similar to those of polymer solutions. We are expecting that optical property changes of polymer can be applicable to metal ion recognition-responsive sensory material. |
