Superabsorbent polymers can absorb several hundred and thousand times as much water as their own weight. This capacity of superabsorbent polymers makes them very useful in a variety of applications in medicine, food industry, chemical engineering, and diaper. In this study superabsorbent polymers were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization of sodium acrylate. The advantage of inverse suspension polymerization is that a powder sample can result and the particle size can be easily controlled. The effect of reaction conditions such as reaction time, reaction temperature, organic phase, initiator, crosslinking agent, and surfactant were investigated. Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) were used as crosslinking agent. Potassium persulfate was used as an initiator. The total amount and the absorption rate of water or 0.9 % NaCl solution were estimated. And the total amount and the absorption rate under the constant pressure were also estimated. |
