Concerned about fossil resources to dwindle and a sudden increase of demand in the developing countries, oil prices unpredictably fluctuates and the high cost imposed by irreversible CO2 emission enforces conventional oil-based industries to reborn in eco-friendly manner. Currently-available plastic materials are mostly from the chemicals produced by oil refinery processes, which account for approximately 5% of total oil supply. With this regard, much attention gets paid to sustainable and renewable bio-resources. Here, we wish to introduce various efforts to develop a distinct "green technology"-based bio/chemical conversion processes to replace existing oil conversion processes with. Newly developing processes for the production of raw materials of bioplastics such as diols, diacid, and furfural derivatives considered as substitutes for aromatic compounds from sustainable and renewable carbohydrates will be also presented. |
