Developing Nafion/silica hybrid membrane using sol-gel process for redox flow battery |

Energy storage has become the critical issue for the world's future energy supply. The redox flow batteries offer the best combination of energy efficiency and life-cycle costs compared with other technologies. Redox flow batteries are designed to convert and store the electrical energy into the chemical energy and release it when required. Nafion/silica hybrid membrane is prepared by the sol-gel process and employed as the separator for Zn-Br redox flow battery. Nafion/silica hybrid membrane was prepared from Nafion dispersion solution and tetraethyl orthosilicate as silica precursor. The Nafion membrane was compared with the Nafion/silica hybrid membranes which have the various amount of silica. The characteristic properties of the Nafion/silica hybrid membranes are investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and LCR meter. Ion chromatograph detects the concentration of bromine ion which diffused. |
