Biodegradable polysaccharides play an intensive role in various applications (drug delivery, medical, cosmetic, etc). Antioxidants, phenolic compounds, inhibit the oxidation of other molecules. Various antioxidants were herein attached onto hyaluronic acid including catechin hydrates, rutin trihydrates, hesperidin, and ascorbic acid using epichlorohydrin. The substitution rate was increased with changing the feed composition. The conjugated polysaccharides were purified with dialysis and followed by lyophilisation. The substituted hyaluronic acid conjugates were investigated by 1H NMR, FT-IR, and UV spectrophotometry. FTIR and 1H NMR confirms the covalent attachment and UV spectrophotometry highlights the substitution rates. The advantages of these conjugations are to overcome the detachment and incorporation of antioxidant moieties (small molecules) during the commercial application. Therefore, all the four conjugated macromolecules were able to interact with oxidizing species and to minimize the oxidative damages. |
