Well ordered periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) with the incorporation of disulphide bridged organosilane precursor in the porewalls have been prepared by sol-gel method under acidic conditions. The precursor bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)disulphide was used to prepare the material along with the TEOS. The occluded surfactant was removed from the prepared materials by extraction method and the obtained materials were further treated with NaBH4 to activate the reductive cleavage of disulphide bridge to yield thiol groups in the materials pore walls. The final materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 sorption, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Thermogravymetric analysis. The morphology and mesosrtuctural order of the materials were observed by SEM, TEM analyses. The material shows excellent and selective adsorption of Hg2+ ions (~2.4 mmol/g) from aqueous solution due to the existence of large amount of mercapto functional groups in the materials. |
