Homologation of carbonyl compounds by one more carbon has been highly useful in organic and medicinal chemistry. Previously we reported a convenient, facile method to provide one-carbon homologation of aliphatic aldehydes with a one-carbon synthon, phenylsulfonylnitromethane via oxidative method. But it also has limitations of incompatibility with oxidizable functional groups such as olefin. To complement this limitation, we have tried to prepare an alternative one-carbon homologation via non-oxidative method, especially reductive method. As a result of a model study, we have found the possibility that some methods might be applied to the homologation of various aliphatic aldehydes with oxidizable functional groups. |
