Rubbed films of polyimides are used in aligning liquid crystals. But the mechanical rubbing process suffers from shortcomings, such as the generation of dust, electrostatic problems, and poor control over the rubbing strength. To overcome these disadvantages, some photoinduced liquid crystal alignment concepts have been reported. One of the approaches is based on the use of polymers with cinnamoyl group, coumarin moiety or styrylpyridine moiety as photosensitive groups in the side groups. Theses groups all are mainly cyclodimerized by UV light. However, the relation between the structure and the photoalignment of the polymers through the photoreaction of theses groups is not yet clarified. In this study, new soluble polyimides containing photoreactive 2-(2-(4-oxyalkylenyloxyphenyl)vinyl)pyridines, 2-styrylpyridine derivatives, as the side groups were synthesized and photoalignment characteristics were investigated. |
