Young barley leaves contain a significant amount of flavonoids such as isovitexin and saponarin as well as natural pigments such as chlorophylls. Chlorophylls exposed to light and temperature are easily discolored by pheophytination. Therefore, the presence of natural pigments in young barley leaf extracts may not be helpful to the preparation of cosmetic formulations. Solvent extraction has been widely used to extract flavonoids from various plants. However, this method requires the use of large amount of solvents and/or high energy consumption. To overcome these limitations, a variety of supercritical fluid processes have been developed to enhance the final product quality. In this study, supercritical carbon dioxide drying and purification of organic solvent extraction solutions of young barley leaf were investigated to produce pigment-free micro- and nano-particulate extracts without residual organic solvents. |
