Polyvinyl alcohol-g-(sulfobetaine methacrylate) coated mesh for effective oil/water separation |
초록 |
The direction for oil/water separation has recently been focused on materials with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. In this work, steel meshes with varying mesh sizes were covered by polyvinyl alcohol-g-(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PVA-g-SBMA), making it superhyrophilic. The increase in hydrophilicity is mainly due to the zwitterionic nature of SBMA which exhibits exceptional binding affinity to water, wherein a single monomer of SBMA can tightly bind up to eight water molecules. Because of this unique characteristic, superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the composite mesh are realized by modifying surface chemistry only without creating a rough surface. Moreover, the PVA-g-SBMA-modified meshes show excellent performance in gravity-driven oil/water separation. |
