Recently, hydrogel sensors based on photonic crystals have received much attention, and the studies on the inverse opal hydrogel (IOH) to apply to the photonic crystal sensors is actively investigated. The hydrogel sensors based on the photonic crystals are operated on the principle that the diffraction color is changed by the Bragg’s law due to the volume change according to external stimulus. Herein, we introduce the 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) to increase the efficiency of IOH-photonic hydrogel sensor. The PAR has high interaction with metal ion, such as nickel, copper, and so on. Furthermore, depending on the formation of the chelate bond the PAR and metal ion, color change of IOH photonic hydrogel sensor can be detected in the range of visible wavelength. The photonic hydrogel sensors for detecting metal ion were fabricated by PAR-functionalization of the IOH using acrylic PAR. |
