In the developments of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers, stabilization of electrically-induced dipole alignment is one of important criteria. Generally, side-chain NLO polymers have good solubility, but they suffer from lower thermal stability of dipole alignment. Main-chain NLO polymers have good thermal stability of dipole alignments, but they often do not dissolve in organic solvents. In this work we prepared novel polyurethane containing 1-(2,3-dioxyethoxy)phenyl)-2-{5-(2,2,3-tricyanovinyl)-2-thiophenyl)}ethenyl groups as NLO-chromophores. We selected the latter because they have large dipole moment. Furthermore they constitute novel Y-type NLO polyesters, and these mid-type NLO polymers are expected to have both the merits of main-chain and side chain-NLO polymers namely stabilization of dipole alignment and good solubility. After confirming the structure of the resulting polymers, we will investigated their electro-optic properties. |
