The influence of polymer morphology on the enzymatic degradation of polyhydroxyalkanoates has been extensively studied by a number of techniques including X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. These studies have revealed that the preferential degradation of amorphous regions is attributed to the higher permeability of degradation medium into the amorphous region. Recently, it was reported that the long period of Poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)) crystal mats shows a discontinuous increase at an annealing temperature of 145 °C. This transition might be attributed by recrystallization. In this study, we attempted to study the detailed morphology of P(3HB) secondary crystallization or recrystallization during heating process by atomic force microscopy. |
