Preparation and Characterization of Rigid PVC/Na+MMT Nanocomposites |

Rigid PVC/clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing method. A torque rheometer equipped with an internal mixer was used to study the compatibility of rigid PVC and clay. Na+MMT was more compatible than any other used clays, because of interaction between Na+ ion within clay and Cl- ion in PVC. The degree of dispersion of Na+MMT in the rigid PVC was directly observed by TEM and indirectly measured through XRD. These results suggested that PVC chains in the rigid PVC nanocomposite insert into the layered silicates. It was found that PVC chains successfully intercalate into layered silicate and then superior mechanical properties. |
