A new type of pearlescent pigment, mica coated pearlescent pigment, is gaining in popularity as a raw material for paint, plastic, ink, and cosmetic. Aluminum oxide for the pearlescent pigment has been developed and put on market recently. Aluminum oxide is extremely colorless and transparent and has good heat resistant and high mechanical strength in the flaky state. The objective of present study is to prepare the aluminum oxide with a greater aspect ratio, uniform small thickness, smooth surface. Aluminum oxide was prepared using an aqueous solution of an aluminum salt mixed with small quantities of a titanium salt. The flaky aluminum oxide comprises aluminum oxide and titanium oxide. After neutralization, a sol or suspension is obtained which is then dried and heated to 900~1200 oC. The resulting -aluminum oxide in the form of hexagonal flake is used as substrates to prepare pearlescent pigment of very high luster. The crystalline phase of the particles was examined by X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis, and the morphology of the particles was observed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM). The amount of titanium salt and flux affected the morphology of aluminium oxide. |
