Preparation of liquid crystal emulsion with improved percutaneous absorption |

Stratum corneum plays a critical role in absorption of active ingredient into skin. Previous emulsion has low efficiency of percutaneous absorption and efficacy. In this study, we developed liquid crystal emulsion (LCE) which has ordered structure. It has multi lamellar structure which is similar with the structure of intercellular lipids that consisted of stratum corneum. LCE was consisted of free fatty acid, ceramide and cholesterol. Hydrophilic niacinamide and hydrophobic retinyl palmitate was incorporated in the LCE for model drug. The structure of LCE was characterized by polarization microscope and cryo SEM. Percutaneous absorption study of LCE was performed using artificial membrane and Franz diffusion cell. Absorbed drug was quantified by HPLC and the result showed increased absorption of drug in the case of LCE compared with original emulsion. |
