Antibiotic-Immobilization for anti-biofouling desalination memebrane |

Membrane biofouling is one of the major challenges in RO (Reverse Osmosis) membrane process. In this study, we report on a stragegy to improve the anti-biofouling performance of RO membranes through immobilizing antibiotic known as a common biocide but not critically harmful chemical to human. The antibiotic was immobilized on the membrane surface via covalent bonding. The stability of the bound antibiotic was confirmed by elemental analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after filtration test and cleaning with ethanol which is a good solvent for the antibiotic used. The amount of the antibiotic on the surface was quantified by XPS elemental anaysis and supported by contact angle analysis that the membrane surface became more hydrophobic after immobilization. The performances of the functionalized membranes were evaluated by cross flow filtration test. the functionalized membrane exhibited a significant antibacterial activity for E. coli. |
