Photocatalytic Activity of Upconversion Nanocrystal Embedded Mesoporous Carbon-TiO2 Hybrid Films |

Photocatalysis has been actively investigated and commercially employed for environmental remediation. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is widely used in the field of photocatalysis and solar energy conversion due to its good stability, nontoxicity, and high activity. Pluronic P123 has been commonly used as the structure-directing agents for the construction of highly organized mesoporous TiO2 (mTiO2). However, the large bandgap (~3.2 eV) limits its sunlight absorption to UV region of the solar spectrum, which only possesses 5% of total solar energy. To demonstrate enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2 under a wider range of solar spectrum, upconversion nanocrystals (UCNs) were utilized. This work focuses on the integration of UCN (NaYF4: Yb3+/Tm3+) into mTiO2 or carbon-doped mTiO2 (mC-TiO2) in a single system in order to maximize the photocatalytic performance by bringing the synergy effect from the constituent elements. |
