Polythiophene is one of the most interesting conducting polymers due to its remarkable electrical and optical properties. Herein we describe the facile fabrication of silica-polythiophene core-shell nanoparticles using a seeded polymerization. The silica nanoparticles with the diameter of 8, 12, and 22 nm were employed, and the ultrathin polythiophene layers (2-4 nm) were successfully coated on the silica nanoseed. Furthermore, the resulting core-shell nanoparticles were utilized as dispersed materials for electrorheological fluids. The rheological properties were explored as a function of shear rate and electric field frequency. |
