Phase diagram constructed from the HPLC fractions of a polystyrene-b-isoprene prepared by anionic polymerization |

We have investigated the phase behavior of polystyrene-b-polyisoprene diblock copolymers (PS-b-PI). Instead of preparing a number of the block copolymers at different compositions, we fractionated a PS-b-PI prepared by anionic polymerization into fractions by two-dimensional liquid chromatography; reversed phase HPLC to fractionate PI block and normal phase HPLC to fractionate PS block with a minimal effect on the other blocks. The phase behavior of the PS-b-PI fractions was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering as well as transmission electron microscopy. From these results a detailed phase diagram of PS-b-PI was constructed over PI volume fraction range from 60-70%. |
