Three types of vinylbenzyldimethylalkylammonium chloride (VDAC) were synthesized by vinylbenzylchloride and N,N-dimethylalkylamine (n = 1, 11, and 17). These cationic salts were used to prepare organophilic montmorillonite by cationic exchange between inorganic ions of MMT and ammonium cations of VDAC in an aqueous medium. In X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments, VDAC-functionalized MMT (VDAC-MMT) showed increased d-spacing of individual layers of MMT, compared to that of Na-MMT. SBS/VDAC-MMT nanocomposites were prepared by melt-process and their mechanical properties were studied by means of tensile measurements, resulting in improved tensile strength, modulus, and elongation at break. We also synthesized a modifier for SBS copolymer, containing VDAC and dimethylsilane groups to enhance the compatibility between polymer and clay. Butadiene block of SBS copoymers reacted with silane modifier via hydrosilylation and the resulting modified SBS were used to perpare nanocomposites. It was shown that VDAC-MMT was melt intercalated into modified SBS and provided better mechanical properties. The morphology and XRD results of the composites will be presented.
