Synthesis and Characterization of Conducting Polypyrrole/Clay Nanocomposites |

Recently, studies on intercalation of electrically conducting polymers (CP) into the interlayer spaces of layered clay materials have been an area of great interest. The main advantages of these nanocomposites are improved thermal and mechanical properties, reduced flammability and better barrier properties comparing to unfilled polymer. Since the interlayers of montmorillonite (MMT) are filled with sodium cations, the hydrophilic properties are enhanced and lead to a high degree of swelling in water. In this study, we demonstrate a simple and easy route of conducting polypyrrole (PPy)- MMT nanocomposites synthesized by the in-situ intercalative polymerization method where conducting PPy particles are prepared within the interlayer spaces of MMT insulator.
