제목 Electrooptical Characterizations of Polyurethane Acrylate used Reflective Polymer Stabilized Cholesteric Liquid Crystals
초록 Cholesteric liquid crystals are of great interest for reflective display application. Two types of reflective cholesteric display cells are known1. The first type utilizes a dispersed polymer network to induce bistability and provide a wide viewing angle. The second type utilizes surface treatments to accomplish these features. Dispersed polymers and surface treatments create permanent defects which result in long term bistability with no applied field. The reflecting and transmitting states correspond to planar and homeotropic textures, respectively. In the planar texture, the liquid crystal has a periodic helical structure with the helix axes perpendicular to the surface of the cell and reflects only one circular polarization of a specific wavelength λ=nP, where n is the average refractive index and P is the helical pitch. The homeotropic texture is transparent and yields a more black state for reflective display with light absorption layer.
Polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals were prepared from homogeneous mixtures including contents of a nematic liquid crystal, a chiral dopant, a photoinitiator and a difunctional acrylate monomer. We used polyurethane acrylate instead of difunctional acrylate monomer. The effects of prepolymer molecular structure were studied in terms of reflection efficiency, voltage-transmittance relationship, threshold voltage, and response time.
