Polymerizations of acrylamide monomers with aluminum alkyls proceed rapidly resulting in high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Although the propagation is fast enough to consume all monomers within a few minutes, only a small portion of initiators are activated during the polymerization. The polymerization with slow initiation and fast propagation has been a serious obstacle to investigate its mechanism and livingness. However, we were able to obtain the intermediate successfully under condition of high initiator concentration and low monomer concentration. It is proposed that the polymerization of acrylamides is initiated by 1,4-addition by alkyl transfer, and propagated by aluminum-oxygen bond interchange. The increase of molecular weight was observed with addition of additional monomer. Details of polymerization and its mechanism will be presented.
