Preceding studies have shown that photosystems I and II in Chlorella vulgaris species absorb light in the range 550nm to 700nm most efficiently and show substantially higher growth rate under red light compared to any other range in the visible light spectrum. So three water-soluble dyes with emission maxima ranging from 580nm to 650nm were carefully selected for use in light-converting medium to provide intensified red light to each microalgal cultures. Within the coloured mixture, the organic dyes absorbed light in the green wavelength range (500nm – 600nm) and bathochromically shifted to emit in the red wavelength range. And the extent of growth enhancement of microalgal cells mixed in this colored medium were examined using UV-Vis spectrometer, and cell count microscpe. Under these converted light, Chlorella v. showed a significant increase in both the growth rate and lipid productivity; overall, the results proved the beneficial effect of red light on microalgal cultures. |
