As the dimension of the materials became decreased in recent material research, the importance of the controlling surface properties increased tremendously. Many efforts to achieve that kind of controllability have conducted in these days. Here we introduce several examples of surface modification of the bulk substrates which have been conducted in our lab. The coatings in this study are composed of hybrid materials, organic-inorganic, or blends of low molecular compounds and polymers. These nano-structured blends include chemically active functional groups so that they can be utilized to introduce additional functionality or create micropatterns on the films. We have studied polyelectrolyte multilayer films to control the interactions of biological moieties on the film surfaces. Micro-patterned polymer films were used to direct the attachment of nanoparticles or biomolecules. Complexation reaction induced by the films will be also included in this paper. |
