Can Water-solubility of Cationics Be Increased by Adding Ethylene oxide? |

The desirable water solubilizing properties of surfactants have been generally obtained by using multiple-hydroxyl groups. In this work, novel cationic surfactants having excellent solubility in water were synthesized by adding ethylene oxide (EO). The di-hydroxyl cationic surfactants were prepared by the condensation reaction between alkyl glycidyl ether and methyl amine in the absence of any catalyst and solvent. After addition reaction of 2 mol and 5 mol of ethylene oxide, respectively, the desirable compounds were obtained by quaternization reaction with dimethyl sulfate. The structure of resulting products was elucidated by 1H NMR and FT-IR. The solubilities of the ethoxylated surfactants were measured and compared with that of a di-hydroxyl cationic surfactant. |
