Photo-responsive honeycomb-patterned polycaprolactone-azobenzene copolymer film |

Photo-responsive polycaprolactone-azobenzene(PCL-Azo) was synthesized by the polymerization of 4-dimethylamino-4'-(6-hydroxy hexyloxy) azobenzene (Azo-monomer) with caprolactone(CL) varying the concentration of Azo-monomer. Honeycomb-patterned porous film was also fabricated by casting the polymer solution under humid conditions without addition of an amphiphilic copolymer necessary to hold water droplets as an air-water interface stabilizer. Structure of honeycomb-patterned films was obtained by the polymer solution after UV illumination, however the structure was not affected by the UV illumination after fabrication though the color of films was reversibly changed by the UV and visible light illumination. The experimental results can be interpreted by the photo-switched isomerization of the azobenzene component in the copolymer from trans- to cis-isomer, which increases the hydrophilicity of the polymer solution inducing the decrease of interfacial tension of the polymer solution. |
