Anti-Adhesion Surface from Zwitterionic Monolayer Coating |

In marine and freshwater environments, anti-biofouling effect is critical for many objects. Anti-adhesion, a type of anti-biofouling, prevents protein adsorption by zwitterionic interactions on the surface. In this study, we prepared the anti-adhesion surface by sequential dip-coating of hydroxyl-functionalized silicon wafer into (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTS) and thiol functionalized zwitterionic molecule, resulting in a zwitterionic surface. During the dip coating process, GPTS anchored to the hydroxyl-functionalized silicon substrate by hydrolysis, and then zwitterionic molecule was attached to GPTS via thiol-epoxy click reaction between two molecules. Chemical attachment was examined by water contact angle and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The anti-adhesion effect was observed using both positively and negatively charged proteins. In addition, anti-bacterial effect was observed using E. coli bacteria. |
