Mutilayered ionic polymer-metal composite actuators prepared by heat-compression technique and their application to arificial muscles |

Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs) are a kind of ionic electro-active polymer (EAP) with many advantages such as large bending deformation and low driving voltage. Although their great potential for application to artificial muscles, they definitely have a low generating force. In this study, we prepared the staked Nafion-IPMC by ‘heat-compression method’, and achieved high bending stiffness and generating stress with due strain by controlling thickness and dimension. We observed that the actuation capability of the prepared Nafion-IPMC has a tendency to significantly agree with the equivalent beam theory. And then, each of the prepared Nafion-IPMCs with the optimal size was multilayered as high-force elements for additive increasing in stress. Due to sufficient actuation performance, that will be leading to wide applicability of electro-active polymer in electrochemical and biomimetic active device |
