Nacre (or mother-of-pearl) is well known for its superior mechanical properties such as high fracture toughness and tensile strength. Unlike artificial nanocomposites, nacre exhibits extremely high contents of mineral and unique molecular level structures; a brick-and-mortar structure with 95 % aragonite nanocrystals (CaCO3) and 5 % biopolymers. Thus, following the nature’s wonderful design, we fabricated clay - cellulose composites, particularly with high montmorillonite (MMT) and minimal carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) contents. In this study, MMT-CMC composites were prepared by scalable solvent casting, varying MMT/CMC ratio. Mechanical properties of the fabricated films were assessed by direct tensile testing. Their molecular level structures were observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). |
