Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is well known bio-based polymer and is recently finding a lot of commercial applications. Ethyl cellulose (EC), which is cellulose derivative from biomass, has been intensively studied and used for polymer materials as alternatives to petroleum-based polymer. Blending of PLA and EC affords all-renewable and biodegradable composites showing cost-performance benefits and enhanced thermal stability. However, owing to inherent characters of PLA and EC, these blends did not show good compatibility. In this study, in order to improve compatibility between PLA and EC, we synthesized and applied EC grafted PLA (EC-g-PLA) as a compatibilizer for the blending of PLA and EC. |
