Fabrication of antibacterial composite with strong mechanical properties for food wate removal vessel application |

In this study, polypropylene (PP) composites with five ZnO levels ranging from 0.1 to 1% have been investigated to determine antimicrobial activity (against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and mechanical properties for food waste removal vessel applications. As the content of ZnO added to the composites increased, the antibacterial properties were improved with decreased mechanical strength. In order to improve the antimicrobial activity and mechanical strength of composites, glass fibers were added to composite and ZnO-Cu nanoparticles were prepared to produce composite with higher antibacterial properties. The prepared samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). ZnO-Cu nanoparticles led to better inhibition of bacterial growth in comparison to ZnO alone. |
