Thermodynamic Parameters of Poly(lactic acid)/Dialkyl Phthalate Systems |

Thermodynamic parameter of binary mixture plays an important role to understand the interaction between two components and the phase transition behavior. Two stereoisomers of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(DL-lactic acid) (PDLLA) and poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), in dialkyl phthalate was investigated to comprehend interaction of two components. A series of dialkyl phthalates were adopted as solvents and the interaction between polymer and solvent was systematically controlled by changing the number of carbon atoms in the alky chain of the phthalates. Based on the phase diagrams of PLA/dialkyl phthalate systems and qualitative understandings of interaction between polymer and dialkyl phthalates, we determine the theta temperature, second virial coefficient and interaction parameter of PLA in a series of dialkyl phthalate systems. Theta temperatures were determined and static light scattering was carried out to obtain second virial coefficients and z-average radii of gyration. Temperature and solvent dependence of interaction parameter was examined quantitatively through Zimm plot of PDLLA/dialkyl phthalate systems. |
