Effect of aging time and temperature on the properties of water glass-based silica aerogels prepared at ambient pressure |

The experimental results of the studies on aging time and temperature on the physical and microstructural properties of sodium silicate (water glass) based silica aerogels prepared at ambient pressure are reported. As-prepared hydrogels were aged from 4 to 12 hours at three different temperatures: 30, 50 and 70 oC. A well tailored network matrix with low density (0.052 g/cm3), less volume shrinkage (7.2 %), and high porosity (96.2 %) was obtained at aging temperature 50 oC for 6 hours. The as prepared silica aerogels were characterized by using FT-IR spectroscopy, TG-DT analysis, N2 absorption/desorption, contact angle, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). |
