Synthesis and characterization of photo-crosslinkable thermogelling methacrylated hexanoyl glycol chitosan for biomedical applications |

The thermogelling polymers that undergo sol-gel transition in water when the temperature increases, have attracted much attention for various biomedical application. In this work, we synthesized hexanoyl glycol chitosan (HGC) as a new thermogelling polymer by chemical modification of glycol chitosan using hexanoic anhydride. The HGC with degree of substitution of 36% showed a thermo-responsive sol-gel transition around 32 oC. In order to design a chemically cross-linkable thermogelling system, we synthesized methacrylated HGCs (M-HGCs) by the reaction of HGC with glycidyl methacrylate. The degree of methacrylation was controlled to have a range of 5%~19.5%. It was observed that the sol-gel transition temperature slightly decreased with the introduction of hydrophobic methacryl groups. The aqueous solutions of M-HGCs could form thermogel and chemically crosslinked by UV irradiation to demonstrate enhanced mechanical properties. M-HGCs may be useful for various biomedical applications. |
