Quartz crystal microbalance has been used for the determination of small variation of mass in the process of phase change, adsorption and composition change. The sublimation pressure of fatty acids, potentially useful for the thermal storage material, is very small at an ambient temperature. The small pressure was indirectly measured using a quartz crystal microbalance by detecting the amount of vapor deposited on the electrode surface of a quartz crystal resonator utilized in the balance. The predicted pressures of four fatty acids and measured frequency variation of the resonator indicated a linear relationship. The experimental results show that the low sublimation pressure of fatty acid can be estimated from the resonant frequency in the quartz crystal microbalance. The thermo-analysis using the DSC and microscopic observation were also conducted to examine the proposed measuring technique.
