Recently, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by the saponification of poly(vinyl ester) has been used in various fields, which are fiber for clothes and industries, films, membranes, and medicines for drug delivery system. To obtain substantially useful PVA, molecular weight, degree of saponification, and syndiotacticity should be increased. In particular, molecular weight of PVA is a fundamental factor affecting physical property, therefore, in order to obtain PVA with proper molecular weight, improvement of polymerization method of vinyl ester is necessary. In this study, PVA with controlled molecular structure was synthesized by RAFT polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) using various RAFT chain transfer agents in suspension media and by its saponification. The effect of RAFT agent on the polymerization behavior of VAc and molecular structure of PVAc and PVA were investigated. |
