Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone) Multi-block Copolymers Containing Phenolphthalein Moieties for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Membrane |

A series of novel sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multi-block copolymers containing phenolphthalein moieties were synthesized by direct copolymerization of phenoxide-terminated and fluorine-terminated oligomers with different segment lengths. The structures of the multi-block copolymers were confirmed by NMR and FT-IR, and their thermal stability and viscosity were also investigated. A series of novel multi-block copolymer membranes were characterized by determining the ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, methanol permeability, proton conductivity and fuel cell performance. Proton conductivity for the multi-block copolymer series was proportional to segment lengths. In addition, methanol permeability of the multi-block copolymers was efficiently reduced due to the presence of phenolphthalein moieties. Therefore, it is noted that the novel multi-block copolymers are useful and possible to be candidate for future polymer electrolyte membrane in DMFCs. |
