Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone) Random and Block Copolymers with Phenolphthalein Groups for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Membrane |

To improve the proton conductivity and methanol permeability, a series of novel sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) block copolymers containing phenolphthalein moieties were synthesized by two method; one was prepared by a two-stage one pot method, which polymerized of the hydrophilic block with desired lengths and the monomers for hydrophobic block. The other was prepared by a direct copolymerization of phenoxide-terminated and fluorine-terminated oligomers with different segment lengths. For comparison, novel random copolymers were also synthesized by direct polymerization with similar degree of sulfonation of block copolymers. Both novel random and block copolymers were characterized by NMR and FT-IR and their thermal stability and viscosity were investigated. In addition, all of prepared novel copolymer membranes were evaluated by determining the ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, methanol permeability, proton conductivity and fuel cell performance. |
