Sol-gel derived light-extraction structures for enhancement of efficiency and stability of flexible polymer light-emitting diodes |

The polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been of interest as future displays and lightings because of their advantages such as low thickness and weight, easy and cheap processing, and flexibility. Unfortunately, the efficiency of PLEDs is limited by photon loss from substrate mode and organic/surface plasmon modes. Therefore the light-extraction structures have been adapted to improve the efficiency. In this work, we fabricated a novel microlens array and a corrugation structure based on an organic-inorganic hybrid sol on a flexible substrate. The both light-extraction structures were fabricated in easy and cost-effective way. The structures exhibit good flexibility and excellent light out-coupling from substrate and organic/surface plasmon modes for each. As a result, the flexible PLEDs with these two structures showed over 30% enhanced efficiency. In addition, the crosslinked network formed by hybrid sol contributed to improved stability of flexible PLEDs with the structures. |
