A nanocomplex compound of Fe3O4, a superparamagnetic nanoparticle of ca. 10nm diameter, with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and folic acid (FA) moiety was prepared and characterized chemically and physically. Such a probe is applicable for tumour-specific marking including apoptosis of cancer cells. Especially, folic acid molecules on the nanoparticle bind to receptors on tumor cell membranes and the cell immediately internalizes it. These studies suggest that the developed superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle would be useful for MRI and as a promising technique for the detection, diagnosis, and staging of cancer. |
