Among the numerous electrical-conducting polymers that have been studied and developed over the past 25 years, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has emerged as one of the most promising conducting polymers. Due to its high environmental stability, low band gap, high conductivity, and excellent transparency, PEDOT has been widely used as an antistatic coating material, electrodes for capacitors or photodiodes, and a hole transport layer of OLED. In many of those applications, solution-based process of PEDOT would be exceptionally useful, which is, however, obstacled by insolubility of PEDOT in water and organic solvents. To overcome this problem, we synthesize a new water-soluble PEDOT graft copolymer. The resulting product, poly(styrenesulfonic acid-g-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PSSA-g-PEDOT), shows water-solubility as well as conductivity. We futher discuss the effects of grafing site density and graft chain length on the electrical conductivity. |
