제목 Detection of antigenic response using orientational variation of liquid crystal microdroplets
초록 Liquid crystals (LCs) transduce interfacial biomolecular interactions into visible optical signals. In the form of droplets, LC will be more useful in the fabrication of biosensors as they have relatively larger surface areas and orientational sensitivity. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody which manifests in various allergic diseases and also plays a pivotal role in responses to allergens. In this study, basophil-mediated allergic reaction was detected by using LC microdroplets in DPBS and 10% blood plasma. Basophils were sensitized by IgE antibody and then reacted with human serum albumin (HSA) anchored on LC microdroplets. The antigen–antibody interactions between HSA-anchored LC microdroplets and IgE antibody bound to the Fc receptors of basophils were found to be capable of causing configurational changes in the LC microdroplets. We confirmed these changes by giving various conditions such as concentration of IgE and HSA, and by controling cell co-culture.
