A Study on the Effect of Surface Treatment of Carbon Nanotubes for Liquid Crystalline Epoxy/ Carbon Nanotube Composites |

Chemical surface treatment of carbon nanotubes was employed to modify the interfaces between liquid crystalline epoxy (LCE) molecules and carbon nanotubes (CNs). Polar functional groups were generated onto the carbon nanotube surfaces as a result of surface treatment. Thermotropic liquid crystal (LC) behavior of LCE in the LCE/CN composites has been examined by polarized optical microscopy (POM). LC phase in the LCE/surface treated CN (oxCN) composite evolved at lower temperature compared to that in LCE/CN due to the polar interaction. The electrical conductivity of LCE/CN composites increased drastically compared to that of pristine LCE resin up to 5 wt % CN loading. Meanwhile, the electrical conductivities of LCE/CNs increased linearly with increasing CN content at high CN loadings. The investigation for thermal and mechanical properties of LCE/CNs were also undertaken from the viewpoint of surface treatment of CNs.
